Don’t Get Caught in the Dark: A Homeowner’s Guide to North Texas Storm Season Prep

Anyone who has lived in the Metroplex for a while knows that storm season is no joke. One minute it’s sunny, and the next, the skies open up with intense wind, rain, and lightning. These powerful storms can do more than just rattle your windows; they pose a significant threat to your home’s electrical system and your family’s comfort and safety. For homeowners in Plano and across North Texas, being proactive is the key to weathering these storms with confidence. At Lumen Electric, we believe that preparation is the best protection. This guide will walk you through the essential steps to safeguard your home’s electrical system, ensuring you have peace of mind when the next storm rolls in.

The First Line of Defense: Whole-Home Surge Protection

When you think of storm damage, you might picture fallen trees or hail. But one of the most common and costly threats is invisible: a power surge. A nearby lightning strike can send a massive jolt of electricity through the power lines and into your home, frying sensitive electronics in an instant. Your computers, smart TVs, modern appliances, and even smart home devices are all vulnerable.

While many people use small, plug-in surge protector strips, these offer limited protection. A much more robust solution is a whole-home surge protection system. Installed directly at your electrical panel, this device acts as a gatekeeper, stopping massive external surges before they can enter your home’s wiring. The benefits are significant:

• Comprehensive Protection: It safeguards every outlet in your home, protecting all your electronics, not just the ones plugged into a power strip.
• Peace of Mind: Many professionally installed units come with a manufacturer’s warranty that may cover the replacement of damaged electronics, offering an incredible safety net.
• Protects Your Investment: The cost of a whole-home system is a fraction of what it would cost to replace your major appliances and home entertainment systems.

Our process begins with a simple on-site evaluation of your electrical panel and grounding system to ensure everything is up to code. From there, we can present options that fit your home’s needs and budget, getting you protected quickly and efficiently.

Uninterrupted Comfort: The Power of a Standby Generator

During a severe storm, power outages are a common occurrence. Losing power for a few hours is an inconvenience, but an outage that lasts for days can become a serious problem, especially during the intense Texas summer heat. Without power, you face spoiled food, no air conditioning, and an inability to work from home or keep essential medical devices running. This is where a standby generator becomes an invaluable asset.

Unlike a portable generator that requires manual setup and can only power a few items, a whole-home standby generator is a permanent solution that kicks in automatically the moment an outage is detected. Within seconds, it restores power to your entire home, allowing life to continue as normal. Investing in a generator means you can:

• Maintain Normal Home Function: Keep your lights, AC, refrigerator, and internet running without interruption.
• Prevent Costly Damage: Avoid hundreds of dollars in spoiled food and prevent issues like frozen pipes during winter storms.
• Ensure Family Safety: Keep your family comfortable and safe, especially if you have young children, elderly family members, or rely on powered medical equipment.

Our team handles the entire generator installation process, from an initial on-site evaluation to determine the right size for your home, to managing city permits and ensuring a seamless, professional startup.

Pre-Storm Electrical Health Check: Signs You Need a Pro

Before storm season hits its peak, it’s wise to give your home’s electrical system a check-up. Weak points in your system are often exacerbated by the stress of a storm. Addressing them now can prevent a bigger emergency later. Here are a few warning signs that you may need professional electrical repairs:

• Flickering or Dimming Lights: If your lights flicker when the wind blows or when a large appliance like your AC kicks on, it could indicate a loose connection somewhere in your system.
• Frequently Tripping Breakers: While a circuit breaker is designed to trip to prevent overload, if a specific breaker trips repeatedly, it points to a deeper issue that needs investigation.
• Outlets That Are Warm or Discolored: An outlet that feels warm to the touch or shows scorch marks is a serious fire hazard and requires immediate attention from a licensed electrician.
• Faulty GFCI Outlets: Test the GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlets in your kitchen, bathrooms, and outdoors. If they don’t trip and reset properly, they won’t protect you from electrical shock.

A professional electrical safety inspection can identify these and other hidden issues, ensuring your system is robust and ready for anything the weather throws at it. It’s a small investment in the overall safety and reliability of your home.
